Jose Luis and Manuel are two hardworking brothers who grew up in the local neighborhood of La Cienega in Cabarete. They always wanted to start their own business. When they finally got the opportunity in December of 2019, it seemed their dreams were coming true! The coffee was hot, the food was delicious, happy hour was packed, and friends from all over the world were so proud of these two guys!
Then there was COVID. After a short three-month run of fantastic times, they were forced to shut down. The four-month closure was not good for their pocketbooks. Despite all odds, they were able to scrape up enough pesos from friends and family to re-open and have been out here representing ever since. It’s pretty cool to know that Manuel’s wife Minaura works in the kitchen, her cousin Jenny works out front, Jose’s wife works on marketing (and this website), and all of their kids are usually running around “helping.”
Every time you take a seat in their beachfront restaurant, you are supporting two local kids (and their families) who grew up, worked really hard, and are doing their best to make it work.
So, what does cocotazo mean??
For the record, a cocotazo has nothing to do with coconuts. Instead, a cocotazo is a disciplinary blow in the coconut (head) with the knuckles of (probably) your (parent’s or grandparent’s or sibling’s) fingers. It is a very effective blow, especially when given to children.
We used this name because we knew that Dominicans would laugh and tourists would ask what it means. So it is the perfect conversation starter!
A beautiful mix of locals and visitors…
Since our owners are Dominican, you will run into tons of local legends who have traveled the world kiting. They love to show the visitors from afar what their country offers. Many of them are also instructors at our kite school, Cabarete Kite Point. So, when you come to our place, you will find yourself surrounded by the perfect mix of locals and visitors happily sharing kiting tips, happy hour drinks, and tons of laughs.
